What is a Preposition?

Think of a preposition as the "glue" in an English sentence. It is a word used before a noun or pronoun to show its relationship to another word in the sentence.

It tells us Where something is, When something happened, or Which direction it is going.

Example: The cat is sitting on the table.
(Here, "on" is the glue that connects the "cat" to the "table".)

1. Prepositions of Time (When?)

The three most common words used to talk about time are In, On, and At.

Preposition When to use it? (Rule) Simple Examples
At Exact times, festivals, or specific moments. I wake up at 6 AM.
We eat sweets at Diwali.
On Days of the week and specific dates. We have a holiday on Sunday.
My birthday is on 15th August.
In Months, Years, Seasons, and long periods. India got freedom in 1947.

These prepositions help us find the location of an object or a person.

He lives in Dumka.
On Touching the surface of something. The book is on the desk.

Under Directly below something else. The dog is sleeping under the bed.

3. Prepositions of Direction (Moving Where?)

These words show movement from one place to another.

  • To: Shows the destination. (I am going to the market.)
  • Into: Moving from outside to the inside. (The frog jumped into the well.)
  • Through: Moving from one end of a closed space to the other. (The train passed through the tunnel.)

4. Common Mistakes (Confusing Pairs)

Between vs. Among

Between is used for exactly TWO people or things. Distribute the chocolates between Ram and Shyam.
Among is used for MORE THAN TWO people or things. Distribute the chocolates among all the students.

In vs. Into

Hello Students! English Grammar में Articles (A, An, The) का इस्तेमाल बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण है। कई बार छात्र इसमें गलती कर देते हैं। इस स्पेशल नोट्स को इस तरह तैयार किया गया है ताकि कमज़ोर से कमज़ोर छात्र भी इसे आसानी से समझ सकें और परीक्षा में पूरे अंक ला सकें।

💡 TRICK OF THE DAY (सबसे आसान नियम)

English Letters (A, E, I, O, U) को मत देखो! हमेशा आवाज़ (Sound) को सुनो।

  • अगर हिन्दी वर्णमाला के स्वर (अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ) की आवाज़ आए → AN लगाओ।
  • अगर हिन्दी वर्णमाला के व्यंजन (क, ख, ग, घ... ज्ञ) की आवाज़ आए → A लगाओ।

1. Indefinite Articles: "A" और "An" का प्रयोग

Boy 'ब' (व्यंजन) A boy
Cat 'क' (व्यंजन) A cat
University 'य' (व्यंजन) ध्यान दें! A university (क्योंकि आवाज़ 'U' की नहीं 'Y' की आ रही है)
One-rupee note 'व' (व्यंजन) ध्यान दें! A one-rupee note

An का प्रयोग कहाँ करें?

जब किसी शब्द का पहला अक्षर बोलते समय Vowel Sound (स्वर ध्वनि) पैदा करे।

शब्द (Word) हिन्दी उच्चारण की पहली ध्वनि सही प्रयोग
Apple 'ए' (स्वर) An apple
Umbrella 'अ' (स्वर) An umbrella
Hour 'आ' (H साइलेंट है!) अति महत्वपूर्ण! An hour (इसे 'आवर' पढ़ते हैं)
M.A. / M.Sc. 'ए' (एम... पहला शब्द 'ए' है) An M.Sc. student / An M.A.
💡 SOUKUL MASTER TIP: कभी भी Uncountable Nouns (जिन्हें गिना नहीं जा सकता) के आगे A या An न लगाएँ। जैसे: A water (गलत), A milk (गलत), A honesty (गलत)।

2. Definite Article: "The" का प्रयोग

"The" का प्रयोग किसी विशेष (Specific/Particular) व्यक्ति, वस्तु या स्थान के लिए होता है जिसके बारे में पहले से बात हो चुकी हो या जो दुनिया में इकलौता हो।

प्रमुख नियम जहाँ "The" लगाना अनिवार्य है:

Category (श्रेणी) नियम / उदाहरण
दुनिया में केवल एक (Unique objects) The Sun, The Moon, The Earth, The Sky
नदियों और सागरों के नाम (Rivers & Oceans) The Ganga, The Yamuna, The Indian Ocean, The Red Sea
धार्मिक ग्रंथों के नाम (Holy Books) The Ramayana, The Gita, The Quran, The Bible
ऐतिहासिक इमारतों के नाम (Historical Monuments) The Taj Mahal, The Red Fort
Superlative Degree (सबसे उत्तम/विशेष) The best boy, The tallest tree, The most beautiful flower
अखबारों के नाम (Newspapers) The Times of India, The Hindu
🔄 Second-Time Mention Rule: जब हम किसी सामान्य चीज़ की बात पहली बार करते हैं, तो A/An लगाते हैं, लेकिन उसी चीज़ की बात दोबारा करते हैं तो वह खास हो जाती है और The लगाते हैं।

उदाहरण: I saw a dog. The dog was barking. (मैंने एक कुत्ता देखा। वह कुत्ता भौंक रहा था।)

3. Omission of Articles (कहाँ पर Articles नहीं लगाना है?)

कमज़ोर छात्र अक्सर हर जगह Article लगा देते हैं। इन जगहों पर कोई भी article (A, An, The) नहीं लगेगा:

❌ No Article Zone:
  • बीमारियों के नाम के पहले: He is suffering from the Fever (fever से पहले कुछ नहीं लगेगा)।
  • भाषाओं के नाम के पहले: I speak the Hindi / English.
  • खेलों के नाम के पहले: I love to play a Cricket.
  • देशों या शहरों के नाम के पहले: He lives in the India / Dumka. (अपवाद: The USA, The UK).
